Kai for the community

Under the umbrella of The Daily Food, we provide support for the community to access to kai, in various forms as we aim adapt to the community needs over time.

Free community school lunches

Every school day, The Daily produce and delivery 200 free school lunches to four local school unfunded by the Governement’s programme.

The meals are distributed to students in most food need.

Frozen meals can be accessed by our community in the following way:

  1. Through The Daily Cafe: First meal given for free, then up to four more meals  at a recommended Koha/donation of $5.00-$10.00 per meal.  This can be paid through the till at the café. 
  2. Poutiri Wellness Centre or The Hub.  After five meals from The Daily Café (or before if client wishes), clients will be directed to The Hub or Poutiri Wellness Centre who are able to provide more wrap around assessment and care. 

redistribution of surplus food

We  redistribute any surplus meals generated through Lunches in Schools at the end of service and make these available to local Pataka Kai, local iwi and organisations like The Hub.

Any surplus ingredients or prepped food is also redistributed to Harvest Church towards their weekly community meal every Wednesday at 5:30pm.

The Daily supports COLAB Kai Resillience group

The Te Puke Maketu Kai Resilience Group is guided by Mana Kai Mana Ora – Western Bay of Plenty (WBoP) Food Sovereignty and Security Plan. The vision of the Mana Kai Mana Ora Plan is that by 2030 the WBoP will be kai secure and well-connected.

“Communities will be kai secure, all people will have access to healthy culturally appropriate, and affordable kai. Our local food system will be environmentally responsible, resilient, and supported by ecosystems that are flourishing because of responsible land and water stewardship”.The Te Puke Maketu Kai Resilience Programme is supported by COLAB and the WBoPDC.
